Insurance
Reinventing motor insurance,
the simple way.
August 2026
The most talked-about car insurers of the last two years share one idea: stop pricing the crowd, price the driver. It is the right idea. It is also harder than it needs to be, because everyone is rebuilding a data layer that already exists inside the car.
Three moves explain where motor insurance is going, and where it gets stuck.
The old book pools risk
A traditional motor book prices you against a group. Age, postcode, the kind of car. Careful drivers subsidise reckless ones, because the insurer never saw either of them drive. It is an average dressed up as a price.
The new wave prices the person
A generation of AI-native insurers broke that open. They price each driver individually, on hundreds of signals rather than a dozen, so the good driver stops paying for the bad one. Cheaper for the careful, and fairer by design.
But they price on proxies
The catch: most of them still infer behaviour from statistics, not from the vehicle. They model the driver they cannot see. It works, and it took a data-science team years to build. The real signal, what the car actually does, stayed out of reach.
The data an insurer spends years approximating is already leaving the vehicle, from the factory, every day.
The shortcut nobody takes
A modern car already measures what an insurer wants to know. Real distance, not a declared estimate. Real usage, not a questionnaire. When it was driven, how far, how hard. This is the ground truth that behavioural pricing tries to reconstruct from proxies, and it does not need a box glued under the dashboard to reach it. On most recent vehicles it comes straight from the manufacturer, with the owner's consent, and nothing installed.
The reason insurers rebuild the data layer instead of reading it is that the car speaks in thirty different dialects. Every manufacturer, every model year, a different feed. Turning that into one clean stream is the real work, and it is the work an insurer should never have to own.
What we hand over
Linkbycar is that data layer, delivered. One normalised API across more than thirty brands, a plug-in device only where a vehicle needs one, and consent handled per driver. An insurer plugs in and gets real usage instead of proxies: pricing on kilometres actually driven, claims checked against the trip that actually happened, an existing book connected without shipping hardware to every policyholder.
That is the simpler version of the reinvention everyone is chasing. Not a new data-science company bolted onto an insurer. The same idea, price the driver not the crowd, reached by reading the vehicle instead of modelling it. We already supply this layer to insurers in Europe, with the data hosted in the European Union.
The insurers winning the pricing argument are not the ones with the most data scientists. They are the ones who stopped guessing what the car does and started reading it.
Book a demo
See Linkbycar running in thirty minutes
Send us your plates or VINs. We come back vehicle by vehicle: which ones are compatible with manufacturer data, which ones need a box, and what data each one returns.
Thirty minutes with our team
We show you the platform live and answer your questions. Send us your plates and we tell you what each vehicle can report.
Nothing to fit on compatible vehicles
Compatible vehicles are activated remotely.* No workshop visit, no fitting, and no vehicle off the road.
No commitment
You keep the vehicle-by-vehicle answer whether or not you go further with us.
* Activation time depends on the manufacturer and can take up to 48 hours.
Request received.
We come back to you within 48 hours to set up the demo. Send us your plates or VINs and we tell you what each vehicle can report. If it is urgent, reply to the confirmation email and a person reads it.
