Geofencing

Draw the line, get the alert

Draw a zone around a port, a depot or a border crossing. When a vehicle enters or leaves it, you get an alert with the vehicle, the zone and the time.

Geofencing

What a zone does once it is drawn

A geofence is a shape on the map with a rule attached. We check each position a vehicle reports against the zones you drew, and raise an alert when a vehicle crosses a line.

  1. 01

    Zones drawn on the map

Outline a zone point by point on the map: a depot, a car park, a customer site, a whole port. The shape follows the ground you draw.

  2. 02

    Entry and exit alerts

An alert when a vehicle enters a zone or leaves it, naming the vehicle, the zone and the time. Rules are set under Automations → Geofences; every alert raised is kept under Alerts.

  3. 03

    Who is inside, right now

Each zone on the map carries a count of the vehicles inside it, so a yard check starts from the screen rather than from a walk round the car park.

  4. 04

Ports and borders, against export theft

A stolen car often leaves by ship or across a border. A zone around the port or the crossing raises the alert when a vehicle that is still reporting drives in, while it is still on the quay.

  5. 05

    Depots and sites

A zone around each depot or site tells you when a vehicle arrives or leaves, without a driver having to call in.

  6. 06

    Zones per fleet

Zones are set per fleet, so each branch or customer account works with its own zones and its own alerts.

In detail

What sits behind an alert

01

The vehicle's own position

On the 30+ brands connected at the factory, position comes from the car's built-in telematics: no box to fit, and none for a thief to pull out. Other vehicles report through a Linkbycar box, into the same zones and the same alerts.

02

An alert on the first report inside

A zone fires on the first position the vehicle reports across its line. How soon that is depends on how often the vehicle reports, which varies by brand and by whether it is moving.

Common Questions
About geofencing

01How precise is a zone?

As precise as the position the vehicle reports: sub-50-metre accuracy in most conditions, from the vehicle's own telematics. Around a port, a depot or a crossing, draw the zone with a margin beyond the ground you care about.

02How fast does an alert arrive?

The alert is raised on the first position the vehicle reports inside the zone, or outside it for an exit. How soon that comes depends on how often the vehicle reports, which varies by manufacturer and by whether the vehicle is moving, so we do not quote a single figure.

03Which vehicles work with geofencing?

Every vehicle connected to Linkbycar: factory-connected brands through their manufacturer's own connectivity, and other vehicles through a Linkbycar box. You can check your fleet brand by brand on the Connect your fleet page.

04How do you handle drivers' privacy?

Out-of-hours geolocation is gated by explicit driver consent, in line with CNIL guidance. Consent status is exposed per vehicle, and data absent by refusal is flagged, never inferred.

05Can a zone cover a whole port or a border?

A zone is a shape you draw, from a single car park to a port area the size of Zeebrugge's. For a border, the useful setup is a zone over each crossing and the roads that lead to it, so the alert also tells you where the vehicle is heading.
