The Claim Was Closed.
The Vehicle Wasn't Lost.
2,054 vehicles from settled theft cases across 3 EU insurers. 100 located post-settlement in under a year. 2.57M€ in recoverable asset value, still transmitting from 11 countries across Africa.
Your Settled Cases Are Still Transmitting
Each dot is a vehicle from a settled theft case, still transmitting GPS data long after the payout. Teal: still in Europe. Red: exported to Africa. The yellow trail tracks one vehicle's journey from Catalonia through Spain to Morocco. These are live, actionable signals from files your team archived months ago.
By the Numbers
Once the settlement is processed, most teams move on. We kept listening. Here's what the data told us.

The Settlement Doesn't End the Story
Every insurer knows the process: theft reported, investigation conducted, claim settled, case archived. But the vehicle doesn't vanish. It keeps moving, keeps transmitting, keeps existing. We assessed 2,054 settled theft cases and found 100 vehicles still pinging. 50 of them in Africa, representing 2.57M€ in recoverable asset value. The case was archived. The connectivity wasn't. And that changes everything: what if you could act before the case is even opened?
What Gets Stolen, and Where It Goes
Across all three insurer portfolios, a clear pattern emerged: Toyota RAV4 is the #1 target for export to Africa, accounting for 44 of 50 vehicles located on the continent. The higher the vehicle value, the further it travels. Average value in Africa: 55,839€ vs 36,941€ in Europe.

From Recovery to Prevention: Zero Hardware, Full Visibility
We start listening after settlement, and the results speak for themselves. But the real question is: what if we monitored your high-value insured vehicles from day one? Our technology requires no hardware installation, no OBD dongles, no dealership visits. It connects to the vehicle's existing embedded telematics: remotely, silently, at scale.
The data proves the window is razor-thin: one vehicle crossed all of Spain in 24 hours before reaching Africa. Pre-theft monitoring on high-value targets like the Toyota RAV4 (avg. 54,038€) turns that 24-hour window into a real-time intercept, entirely avoiding the loss scenario:
Zero Hardware
No OBD dongle, no dealer visit, no installation appointment. We connect to the vehicle's existing embedded telematics: remotely, at scale.
Real-Time Alerts
A Toyota RAV4 heading south from Paris at 2am triggers an immediate alert. Minutes, not months.
Intercept Before Export
Vehicles transit Spain in under 24 hours. Pre-theft monitoring catches them before the port, entirely avoiding the loss.
2.5M€ Exposed
44 Toyotas in Africa = 2.49M€ in base value. One intercepted RAV4 pays for an entire year of monitoring.
The Platform: What It Looks Like in Practice
Linkbycar's spatiotemporal search, geofencing, and trip analysis tools give claim teams and fleet managers instant visibility into vehicle movements, no hardware required.
Spatiotemporal search: find which vehicles were in a given area at a given time
Geofencing: automated alerts when a vehicle enters or exits a defined zone
Trip history: full route reconstruction with distance, duration and locations
Trip replay: animated playback of the vehicle's journey on the map
The High-Risk Profile
Our data reveals a clear theft-for-export profile. If your portfolio includes these characteristics, pre-theft monitoring should be a priority:
- Toyota RAV4 Hybrid.86% end up in Africa. The #1 export target.
- Base price > 40,000€.Vehicles in Africa average 55,839€ vs 36,941€ in Europe.
- Model years 2019-2021.Sweet spot: new enough to be valuable, old enough for parts demand.
- Hybrid / HEV powertrain.238 hybrids in our dataset; highly prized in markets with expensive fuel.
- Insured in France. In our dataset, vehicles insured in the French market showed the highest export rate to Africa.
Two Theft Markets, One Solution
The data reveals two distinct theft patterns:
1. Local resale (Peugeot, VW, Audi)
Volume brands stolen for domestic resale or parts. These stay in France/Belgium. Lower unit value but high volume (736 Peugeots, 324 Audis, 319 Volkswagens).
2. Export to Africa (Toyota RAV4)
Specifically targeted for their reliability, hybrid efficiency, and high resale value in West African markets. Guinea/Mali (12), Senegal (11), Mauritania (7), Congo (5), Cameroon (4). Almost exclusively RAV4 models.
Pre-theft monitoring addresses both: real-time geofencing catches local moves, while cross-border alerts flag export attempts before the vehicle reaches a port.
The Routes They Take After Settlement
Settling the claim doesn't settle the vehicle. Here are the trafficking corridors we uncovered by keeping the connection alive.
Case 1: Catalonia to Morocco via the Mediterranean Corridor
One vehicle, insured by Insurer A, was first detected near Perpignan, Catalonia (lat 42.05) on February 14, 2026. For two weeks it remained in the Catalonia/Southern France area. Then on March 3rd, it began a rapid southbound journey: in a single day it crossed through Barcelona, Valencia, and continued down the Spanish Mediterranean coast. By March 4th, it had reached the Strait of Gibraltar area (lat 37.0). The vehicle then settled near Malaga/Costa del Sol (lat 36.7) where it was last seen on March 31st, with 29,752 GPS datapoints recorded.
29,752 GPS points Feb 14 - Mar 31, 2026 5.6 latitude degrees traveled ~700km in 24h
Case 2: The Mauritania-Senegal Run
A Insurer A recovered vehicle appeared in Nouakchott, Mauritania (lat 18.12) on February 17, 2026. Over the following weeks, it traveled south along the West African coast, covering 3.5 degrees of latitude (~390km) through the Sahel before reaching Dakar, Senegal (lat 14.67) on March 28. With only 353 GPS points, this vehicle had intermittent connectivity: classic behavior of a vehicle being moved through areas with limited network coverage.
353 GPS points Nouakchott to Dakar ~390km journey Intermittent connectivity
Case 3: The West African Hub: Guinea, Mali, Senegal
The densest cluster of monitored vehicles sits in the triangle between Bamako (Mali), Conakry (Guinea), and Dakar (Senegal). Among French-insured vehicles in our sample, over 70% were located in Africa. One vehicle in Mali's capital has been transmitting for over a month with 19,208 GPS points: the device still works, the vehicle is still moving, but it's 5,000km from its insured owner.
14 vehicles in Guinea/Mali 11 in Senegal 7 in Mauritania 70%+ of French-insured vehicles in Africa
Case 4: Congo-Brazzaville, The Long-Distance Destination
Five vehicles ended up in Brazzaville, Republic of Congo (lat -4.3, lon 15.3), over 6,000km from France. One French-insured vehicle has been transmitting since December 2024 with 812 GPS points, pinging from the same neighborhood in Brazzaville. These vehicles crossed the equator, suggesting either a maritime route (likely through West African ports) or an overland route through Cameroon and Central Africa.
5 vehicles in Congo 6,000+ km from origin Crossed the equator Still transmitting
Case 5: Algeria, The Silent Majority
Two vehicles in Algeria's Constantine area (lat 36.3, lon 6.6) are the most "talkative" in our dataset: one has transmitted 82,474 GPS points and the other 45,940. They are being driven daily, likely as regular vehicles. A third vehicle was detected in Oran (lat 35.7, lon -0.8) with 111,845 points, the most prolific transmitter. These vehicles are clearly in active daily use in Algeria.
111,845 GPS points (Oran) 82,474 points (Constantine) Daily active use Persistent connectivity
Key Insights for EU Insurers
Settled Doesn't Mean Silent
100 out of 2,054 vehicles from settled cases were located in under a year. Your archived theft portfolio may still contain live, actionable intelligence.
The Signal Never Stopped
Embedded telematics survived the theft, the resale, and the export. One vehicle has sent 111,845 GPS pings from Algeria. The claim was closed; the device wasn't.
West Africa Is the Destination
The Dakar-Bamako-Conakry triangle absorbs 64% of exported vehicles. Knowing the destination enables targeted cross-border cooperation.
Higher Value = Further Travel
Vehicles in Africa average 55,839€ vs 36,941€ in Europe. The most valuable claims are the ones most likely to be recoverable, if you look.
The 24-Hour Window
One vehicle crossed all of Spain in a single day. Pre-theft monitoring turns this into an interception window. Post-theft, it's a forensic trail.
From Recovery to Prevention
Post-theft intelligence proves the tech works. Pre-theft monitoring prevents the claim entirely. One intercepted Toyota RAV4 saves 54,038€.

Disclaimer: This case study is based on a limited sample of 2,054 vehicles across three insurers and does not claim to be representative of the broader EU market or overall vehicle theft patterns. The findings reflect hard facts from our own data subset and should be interpreted within that scope. Different portfolios, geographies, and vehicle mixes may yield different results. The value of this analysis lies in demonstrating what connected vehicle intelligence can uncover when applied to real claim data.
